1995 Challenge Trophy Winners

The 1993 Geoff Hardy Kuitpo from the southern Adelaide Hills has won the inaugural Qantas Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. The competition, destined to become an annual event, was designed to find the best commercially available Shiraz in Australia. The Geoff Hardy Kuitpo Shiraz outpointed 103 other entrants from around Australia, winning the only gold medal awarded by the judges James Halliday, Brian Croser and Geoff Merrill. The 1993 Steve Maglieri Shiraz from McLaren Vale and the 1991 Grant Burge Meschach Shiraz from the Barossa Valley tied for second place, completing a clean sweep of the awards by South Australian wineries.

Challenge Director Mark McKenzie said the inaugural event proved highly successful, attracting most of Australia’s acclaimed Shiraz brands and a large number of Shiraz enthusiasts to the public tastings of the Top 80 wines at the seven host wineries in Goulburn Valley. ‘It was a very tough competition because we aggregated and averaged the judges points rather than have the traditional combined panel of judges as with other wine competitions. To perform at medal award winning level in the Challenge is a real recognition of the quality of the wine,’ said Mr McKenzie.
