2014 Challenge Trophy Winners

Moppity Vineyards has won the 2014 Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge Trophy with its 2013 Reserve Shiraz.
One of Australia’s most prestigious and valuable wine awards, this year’s event attracted 392 entries from over 60 regions, Moppity’s winning wine, produced in the cool climate NSW Hilltops wine region, triumphed over strong competition particularly from McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley.
The Graphix Labels & Packaging Trophy for the Best Shiraz under $25.00 was awarded to Rosemount Estate for their 2013 District Shiraz produced from McLaren Vale fruit.
The winners were announced by Rob Hicks, well known Australian Wine Industry identity, on Friday evening the 31st of November at the gala awards presentation dinner held at the recently refurbished Mitchelton Winery.
The 20th Great Australian Shiraz Challenge received 268 entries from South Australia, 66 from Victoria, 29 from NSW, 8 from the ACT and 1 from Queensland, with a total of 213 medals awarded including 2 Trophies, 14 Gold, 51 Silver and 219 Bronze medals; further highlighting the extremely high overall quality of entries with over 70% receiving an award.
The 2014 Judging panel consisted of Gary Baldwin (Chairman), Simon Osicka, Jeni Port, Victor Nash, Jen Pfeiffer and Darren Rathbone.
Gary Baldwin – Chairman’s comments
This is my fourth year as chairman of judges at the Visy Great Shiraz Challenge and perhaps contrary to popular belief it doesn’t get easier to choose the best wines when you are faced with such an impressive array of entries from all over Australia. I would also like offer a very sincere vote of thanks to my five fellow judges. Their task was formidable, with over 390 wines to taste in two days and with a brief to select the best Australian Shiraz out of the pack.
